The Romantic Generation: Schubert and Song, Christine Wu
Free - no tickets required
The focus of this presentation is on the Romantic Lied, specifically, of Franz Schubert, who elevated the genre of the art song through his incredibly sophisticated usage of textual interplay between poetry and music. His songs left a deep impression on his successors, including Franz Liszt, whose song transcriptions add yet another layer of meaning. The emergence of this form, and Schubert’s mastery of it, in a way represents a summation of the Romantic generation and spirit. (1:30pm: Presentation and Performance; 2:30pm: Master Class.)

Blackthorn Concert (Troy)
March 15, 2023 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Rd, Troy, MI 48083, USA
Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music.
Traditional songs of emigration, sea shanties, lively jigs and reels, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people.
What makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments, including wooden flute, accordion, tin whistle, five string banjo, cittern, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony.
Blackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls, universities and festivals, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest.

Prometheus. Beginnings is a devised dance theatre work, conceived by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast, that takes inspiration and ideas from two plays written by the Berlin-based playwright Kevin Rittberger. The piece creates the environment in which some of the pressing questions of our time float in, come to focus, and interact with each other. The piece is an exploration of an entanglement of movement, spoken word, improvisational music score by Steve Hilmy and the evocative set of the production. Prometheus. Beginnings was originally created in the context of the conference “Diffractive World-Making – Theatre and Science Beyond the Capitalocene” and an initial version was premiered at the University of Indiana.

Hill Auditorium, 825 N University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA
University Symphony Orchestra
Free - no tickets required
The University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its music director, Kenneth Kiesler, performs one of the most beloved works in the repertoire for orchestra, the Second Symphony by Finnish composer, Jan Sibelius.
The program also features percussion soloist James Ko, Winner of the 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition, playing the virtuosic and colorful Percussion Concerto by Chen Yi. The first woman in China to receive a master’s degree in composition, Chen Yi received her doctoral degree at Columbia University and joined the faculty of the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1998. The following year she became a United States citizen, and, in 2001 she received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Living, a cash grant awarded with the sole requirement of full-time composing. She has written major works for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert opens with an evocative out-take from the opera Nixon in China, The Chairman Dances, subtitled a Foxtrot for Orchestra, by American composer John Adams. The word “Dances” in the title is a verb, not a noun. The music depicts Madame Mao “crashing” a presidential banquet, hanging paper lanterns, and performing a dance; Chairman Mao Zedong descends from his portrait, and the two dance a foxtrot, going back in time together.

Featuring James Ko, percussion, Winner, 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition

Hannah O’Brien and Grant Flick play a mix of original compositions and traditional pieces from various fiddling traditions. Their arrangements have been worked up without notation and sometimes incorporate improvised sections. While the duo feels at home on double fiddle, they also change instrumentation often incorporating tenor guitar and nyckelharpa. Their musical interests are broad and as a result their programs showcase an eclectic assemblage of repertoire.
This event is sponsored by the Farmington Friends of the Library.

OU Repertory Dance Company presents PATHS
Paths is the fourth show the Repertory Dance Company, under the direction of Thayer Jonutz, has presented at the Engineering Center. This year’s iteration has evolved even further in that the show will include works by dance faculty members Elizabeth Kattner, Teresa Muller and Thayer Jonutz, whereas in the past Professor Jonutz has been the sole author of the choreography. Another expansion from past years is that the Repertory Dance Company will be accompanied by other dancers from our dance department in order to fulfill Professor Kattner’s vision for her larger work. Presenting a show in the atrium space of the Engineering Building realizes one of the missions of the Department of Dance — to collaboratively perform in non-traditional spaces. In that spirit, the Repertory Dance Company will be performing a collaborative work that was created with Shannon Sheldrick, an OU master of trumpet student.
Pay as you wish at the door. All proceeds support our students' Germany Contemporary Dance study abroad course in May 2023.
